One Expensive Shot

Today, I took Leslie to the doctor to have her chemo pump removed and to receive her shot which causes her bone marrow to produce platelets. The shot cost $5600! We are so thankful for good health insurance through this whole experience. Leslie continues to deal with fatigue, hot flashes, and the shooting pains that accompany each chemo treatment.

This evening, my mom arrived to spend the weekend here. The kids were so excited, which delayed bed time a little bit. She read to them before bed, and we put them all in the same room so Grandma could sleep in McGrooter's bed.

Please continue to pray for us all, especially for strength!

chaud devant ! 1EUR=1.5125 USD

Got it!

Today, Leslie did receive her chemotherapy treatment. In an email to our family she wrote, "They like for the platelets to be 100,000 and mine were 94,000. However, I found out that my white blood cells were 3,900 and they are supposed to be between 5,000 – 10,000. So, I get to get that wonderful shot again on Thursday. The one that is still making my bones hurt. It makes the bone marrow reproduce, but makes my bones really hurt. The last one was three weeks ago and I’m still hurting from that one!"

Leslie seemed to be doing well tonight, although worn out and dealing with the hot flashes. But we are another step closer to the end!

In other news, we had a storm move through Georgia early this morning that produced wind, rain, lightening, and some hail at our house. But at my brother's place in Senoia, they got hammered by some lightening pretty good. Evidently, their foundation received the brunt of it and as a result, several leaks were produced in their plumbing. It created such a mess that they had to have their water shut off at the street. I really hate this for them. They called it an "inconvenience," but there is no doubt that this episode just plain stinks! A plumber will come out tomorrow to survey the damage further and determine how to make repairs. But it looks like they are going to have to tear up the foundation to accomplish anything. So pray for them as they deal with the loss of water, ongoing repairs, and the costs that I'm sure will be a real pain.

Birthday Party Weekend

Today was one of the best birthdays I have had. I guess that may seem strange given all that we are going through. But Leslie really made the weekend a special one for me, and we all enjoyed making some good memories together.

Saturday we spent the day getting some work done around the house, then I took the kids to get haircuts. We got home and I ran everyone through showers before some friends came over for a birthday party. Paul & Cindy along with Andy & Kellie and their four girls came over for taco salad and an evening of Wii games. We guys finally got the kids distracted and enjoyed a round of golf. Paul showed us out shooting an amazing game for his first time on Wii golf. We really had a great time. Leslie gave me a Wii Zapper, a new Wii game, and Carrie Underwood's newest CD. McGrooter was so excited about the Zapper that I had to remind him it was my present!

Today we got up early to go to church to meet with the elders in order to join Westminster PCA. We were warmly received and then after church enjoyed lunch to support the youth mission trip to Peru. After some rest this afternoon, we went to Outback with Leslie's family to continue the birthday festivities. We had another great time together, and then all came home ready for bed! But our evening wasn't complete. McGrooter's loose tooth finally gave way to Leslie's pulling and his continual wiggling of it all weekend. McGrooter proudly called the grandparents to proclaim the victory! Here he excitedly shows us the tooth. I can't believe how fast my boy is growing up!

I also received a birthday greeting from my sister with a picture of her and Bennett after they ran a 5k together today. The billboard in the background shows Jenny along with other healthcare folks advertising the race. Finally, I also received the following goofy video from my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, Zack. He'll probably kill me for putting it on here, but I got a kick out of it so I had to!

Baseball News

A good friend of mine from work, Joey Smith, will soon begin contributing to an Atlanta Braves news website called BravesBlast.com. I'm excited for Joey because not only is he a huge baseball fan, but he is also a great writer. I've bugged him a few times to start blogging because he has such a great way with words. Joey keeps me informed of baseball news, always knows the answers to my Braves questions, and keeps me regularly entertained with his hilarious recounting of fatherhood mischief.

In other baseball news, I came across this article today about Leslie's cousin, Richard Runldes, who plays minor league ball. Richard, known in baseball circles as Rich, is a great pitcher who we think has a bright future. The articles seems to indicate the same thing. Richard's dad, Uncle Gary to us, is the head baseball coach at the University of West Alabama. Baseball is in the family genes!

Leslie is pooped after a long week of teaching and caring for the family. She is preparing for a get-together tomorrow night to celebrate my birthday. We're planning on having some friends over for taco salad. Sunday, we'll get together with her family to continue the festivities. The kids keep talking about cake, and can't understand why I don't like it. Maybe we'll have a pie or something that will suffice their desires.

Thank You

We have been so blessed by so many friends and family who have ministered to us over the past eight months. We have received countless emails, comments on the blogs, cards, checks, gift cards, meals, and words of encouragement. I have written about some of these things here, but we have not had time to write personal thank you notes. So I am taking the liberty (not that we won't write thank you notes eventually) to write a public "thank you" to all who have cared so deeply for us in these and other ways. Being reminded of people near and far who are thinking about and praying for us has been a great source of encouragement. We will never be the same as the result of this experience, and we will never forget the many ways people have ministered to us.

This week has been a real blessing since Leslie did not receive chemo. Our evenings have gone so smoothly, and we are all enjoying an experience that has been closer to normal than we have known in a long time. Leslie continues to be exhausted and there are still side effects she struggles with physically, but not having chemo has been huge.

On a side note, McGrooter has his first loose tooth. He is really excited about losing it and even let me pull on it tonight. But it would not come out, to his disappointment. I think he really wanted to show it off at school tomorrow.

On another side note, some readers here may wonder why the corny ads appear on the right side blog. These ads help offset the hosting of the blog in that any time someone clicks on an ad, the advertiser pays for that click. I can't control the content of the ads, but it is worth the experiment to see if any visitors do click on any ads from time to time.

And on a final, somewhat humorous note, our brother-in-law, Clay, recently posted a this video on YouTube. Although he may need counseling, he said it felt really good!

Rejected Once Again

Leslie was rejected once again for chemo today due to her low platelet counts. They were 80,000 this time and the doctor wants them at 100,000. Last time they were too low she was at 86,000. So each time she's a little bit lower. This is due mainly to the cumulative effect of the chemo on her body. The complication of these low counts is that she is more exhausted than normal, but her spirits are good. They will try again next week. If it is a go, then the doctor wants to wait three weeks until the next treatment, instead of the normal two. This may prolong the overall treatment beyond March or the doctor may opt to conclude her chemo treatments. He has indicated that they have just about maxed out what her body can take, so that may lead them to decide to end things early.

Tonight we had Mike, Becky and Poppie with us for dinner. It was "Terrific Turkey Taco Tuesday" for which Leslie and Becky created a wonderful meal. The kids really ate them up.

An Overdue Update

I know, I know. I've run into a few of you who faithfully read this, only to hear the same thing, "Are you guys alright? The blog hasn't been updated." I sincerely apologize, but life has gotten the better of me lately. I have either not had time, or felt like sleep was more important at the moment. Since I am home today (sick again), I thought I could at least write a bit. I finally went to see the doc on Saturday after having a severely sore throat, just so I could be sure I didn't have strep (have to be extra careful around Leslie with these bugs). The doc said I do not have strep, for which we are all thankful, and that it is just an upper-respiratory infection. Strangely though, I have never had a throat this sore (and last this long). But today is day three of the antibiotic, so I am hoping to feel renewed soon. Up until Sunday morning I didn't feel bad except for my throat. So I still went out of town this past week, to Southern Alabama this time (or Lower Alabama as some know it). I had many wonderful visits with a number of folks in five different churches.

Leslie and the kids are out of school today. She is working with our friend, Olivia, to clean the house as much as possible before her next treatment (tomorrow). Another friend came over and got the kids so that they could play. I was so thankful, for their sake, that they could go because I'm not up to doing many fun things today.

We made a quick trip to Griffin on Saturday. Mom and Dad have been cleaning out the upstairs of their garage and found some more of my belongings. I didn't know I had anything left there, but all in all, they filled up the back of my truck! It's mostly stuff I need to just throw away, but there were a few cool little things I noticed (which I had forgotten about). I haven't had time to go through it all yet, and to my knowledge I haven't seen any of this stuff since November of '96 when it was shipped back from Hawaii. Anyway, we had a wonderful visit with Dad & Mom and Uncle Dan too (he is there helping Dad make some repairs on the house). We got in about 10 and all the kiddos made the transfer to bed just fine.

Another fun recent event was a trip to see the Gwinnett Gladiators play hockey. Cousin Bennett won four tickets to the game and so he, Uncle Curtis, McGrooter and I all went. It was a blast! I had never been to a hockey game and wasn't sure if I would find it all that exciting. But we had a lot of fun and the boys really enjoyed the whole experience (including the fights). Because it's a semi-pro league the tickets aren't all that expensive, so I recommend it to any Atlanta folks who want to go. I can't wait until the Buford Braves get here!

I've blabbered enough now. I will close with a picture from INK, when I took the kids a few weeks ago. We always have fun when we go there, and they had a new airplane exhibit that was everyones' favorite. Okay, while I'm at it, here is the Munch doing some grocery shopping. And here is Aggie making appointments at the hair salon. And finally, here is McGrooter getting his teeth cleaned at the dentist.

Again, tomorrow is Leslie's next treatment as long as her counts are up. She hasn't bounced back as quickly this time as she did last, so we're anxious to find out what the numbers will be. Please continue to pray for her. And pray for us all; as in some ways this stage of the process is more difficult than others. Everyone is tired. The shock of "cancer" has worn off. In many ways life seems normal. So it is difficult dealing with the realities of this because life isn't normal right now.

Je me suis habitué à Metatrader , qui me satisfait largement.

bon weekend.

Winding Down

I'm very thankful this week is finishing up. It's been a long one. McGrooter is on the mend and although Aggie now has a fever, she is acting fine and we are hoping no other symptoms show up. Leslie parents continued to be a huge help to us, especially yesterday as I was gone with work-related business until 10 last night. Becky stayed the entire time with Leslie and the kids. Today I came home a little early to relieve her and I believe she went home and crashed!

Leslie continues to hurt. She's still limited to the bed or the recliner. The shot they gave her yesterday to deal with her low platelet count continues to have side effects. And of course, the chemo is still ravaging her body. I'm hoping she turns the corner tomorrow and begins to feel better.

There continue to be bright spots in the midst of all this. Today as I took Munchkin to school, she asked me what I was going to be when I grew up. After I assured her that I still didn't know, she explained to me that she was going to be a superhero. Furthermore, she said I could be a superhero with her (like her partner). Then she said she was going to be a pilot, that she would have a pink plane, a pink helmet (because she needed to fly into space), and a matching pink suit. She told me mine would be black. Then she asked, "can you show me how to drive mine?" Then, "will you start mine for me?" It made me laugh!

Well, my computer crashed last night while I was writing, and since it was 12:30 I just sent to bed and am finishing this Sat morning. I haven't even been downstairs to see what happened. We all had a good night, and everyone seems well today. Leslie is up and about, and has both girls cleaning, straigtening, and otherwise busy. I need to go clean up my mess from fixing breakfast. Today feels almost normal...which is refreshingly strange!

Holding Our Breath

We are still holding our breath, hoping that no one else gets the flu bug. McGrooter was feeling better today, although he still has a fever. Mike & Becky continue to serve us, ensuring everything is taken care of while I am at work. What a blessing! Leslie has struggled today with the continued shooting pains that ensue after a treatment. She's remained in the bed. The girls are carrying on like life is normal!

Our niece, Miriam, went to a pediatric endrocrinologist today and her sugar was over 400. The decided to install an insulin pump instead of opting for the four shots of insulin each day. We are so thankful for this technology. The docs said the don't typically opt for the pump with a 3-year-old, but because Clay has one they felt confident he and Dana could manage Miriam's. Miriam has been so brave throughout the ordeal, but we continue to hurt for them all. Continue to pray for them.

More Challenges

Leslie's family has really been hit hard this past year, most of which you have read about here if you're keeping up. Today Leslie received another chemo treatment. We then learned that McGrooter has the flu. He is really sick and we have worked feverishly today to disinfect the house. Leslie's parents came to the rescue to help with this. Then this evening we got a call from Leslie's sister (Dana) in SC. They had to take their three-year-old (Miriam) to the ER after she had a number of symptoms including high sugar. The initial tests point to juvenile diabetes (her sugar was 327). Dana's husband, Clay, has juvenile onset diabetes. Needless to say, this is another huge hit. We are all devastated and hurting. Please keep the family in your prayers.

Pray too for Leslie's protection from the flu. Her body is very vulnerable right now. Pray too that the girls don't get it so that we can get our house clean quickly. Selfishly, I ask you to pray for me as well, as the caregiver. I'm not especially good at this role, and I don't do well with throw up! Leslie and I both had our flu shots, but the kids did not get one this year.

Super Sunday

We're having a good day today and the rain is now really coming down. Boy do we need it! The kids and I are at home playing bowling on the Wii. It's a good Sunday evening activity after naps and such. Not that anyone actually slept, but everyone did lay in their beds for a few minutes. Leslie is now making her Wal-Mart run. I don't think she really feels like doing it, but I think she wants to feel like it so much that she makes herself, instead of just giving me a list. She's been doing pretty well since she didn't have chemo this week, but has complained of feeling "lead boned."

After church today we went to lunch with some of our neighbors, David & Judith. It was great to get to know them, and I was impressed that they even wanted to with our three kids! But the kids did great and let us visit. They recently moved here from Florida and he is teaching English at North Georgia.

Tomorrow the kids are out of school for a teacher workday. So I am going to be home with them. With a 90% chance of rain tomorrow I don't think we'll get much outside time. Too bad we can't have a day like we did yesterday with highs in the low sixties.

Today on bowling I was finally able to beat McGrooter's high score of 209. He talks some serious trash, so I really needed to! I pulled a 217 and so he is now feverishly bowling as much as he can to try and beat my high score (even though he won't admit it). We tried to play a group game of golf with the girls, but they pooped out after the third or fourth hole. It's been great fun to have, not just with the kids but with adults too!

As you can probably tell, I've written this over a few hour period while playing with the kids and refereeing some. So it's probably very scattered. But there you have the latest.

semaine 5- janvier 2008

Les stats de la semaine:

32 trades
